Introduction

Advent (from the Latin adventus, meaning "coming") begins on the 4th Sunday before Christmas Day, and is often considered a season of anticipation and hope. For many Christians it is not just about waiting for a Savior to be born, but also looking to a time when the Christ will come again, in power and with authority. The traditional emphases for this season are on both the First and Second Coming of Jesus Christ, and our accountability for faithfulness.

Each devotion will feature a Bible passage about a person or persons from the Biblical Era (including one from the Apocrypha). There will also be a theme/introduction to each week that helps set the tone for each of the 4 weeks which is not directly tied to individuals.

The Offices of Christ tell us how Jesus served as the ultimate Judge, Priest, Prophet and King, and how those roles were filled less-than-perfectly by Hebrew and Gentile alike in the time before His incarnation – giving the world glimpses of the Messiah who was to come.

We encourage you to read (from your own Bible) the Scripture passage that accompanies each daily study. Then, dive into the devotion itself. Using the booklet is handy in this way, but if you’d like to comment or dialogue with others about the material, you may wish to follow up with the online version.

Each author recognizes that the ministry leaders sharing space in this booklet may not share the same theology or doctrine on certain issues. If you have any questions, it would be appropriate for you to ask your pastor.

May these Scripture texts and devotions lead you into a deeper understanding of God’s work through the ages, and strengthen the relationship with your Savior and Brother, Jesus Christ.

Judges 3:7-11 As we start to prepare for the 2021 Christmas season, it is good to reflect on the subject and purpose of the Holiday. Jesus, more than a babe in a manger, is the Judge of all the earth as recorded in Genesis 18:25. December 8: Hosea

Hosea 1-3 The story of Hosea is hard to hear (it’s kind of risqué), but it’s incredibly basic to our life as Christians in relationship with a Merciful God. A metaphor integrates the invisible world with the visible. Metaphors help us see things that are otherwise unseen. For example, what is sin against God? Well, we could say that sin against God is simply sin against God. That’s just what it is. Or, we could say that sin against God is when a woman is married to a husband who is a good man, a husband who loves her and cares for her, and yet this woman leaves her husband, abandons his love, and she goes to sell her body on the streets…and she does this because…when love and things are weighed in the balance…one is often more tangible, or understandable. From our couches, dinner tables or beds – wherever we’re reading these devotions, we question Gomer and why she would stray from the comforts Hosea provides. December 2: Gideon

Judges 6-8 Suffering is never easy, especially when it lasts for years with no relief in sight. For seven years, crippling poverty, oppression, and tyranny were the reality for the Israelites. Their rebellion against God had landed them in this spot, but in spite of their rebellion, God would once again rescue them. This time God would choose Gideon to lead the rescue of his people. Gideon’s response when he learned of God’s plan? Disbelief and questioning if God’s so good and powerful, then why had God’s people experienced the hardships they were experiencing? And when God pushed back on Gideon, Gideon told God every reason Gideon was unqualified to do what God had called him to do, concluding with the fact that Gideon was an unimpressive person from an unimpressive family. But God was undeterred. He used Gideon to bring about a decisive victory in battle.
